PAT Testing

PAT Testing

Portable Appliance Testing for Electrical Safety and Compliance Across Belfast and Northern Ireland

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is a routine check of electrical appliances to make sure they are safe to use. It involves a series of visual inspections and electronic tests carried out by a trained professional.

These checks help you prevent electrical accidents and meet your legal duties under health and safety laws. If you’re an employer, landlord, or responsible for a premises, you must make sure that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT Testing is one way to do this.

There’s no set legal interval for PAT Testing, but you should carry it out regularly based on the type of equipment and how it’s used. Appliances in high-risk areas, such as construction sites or kitchens, often need testing more often than those in lower-risk places like offices.

PAT Testing helps you spot damaged or faulty equipment before it becomes dangerous. Keeping records of your tests can also support insurance claims and show compliance during inspections.

Who Needs PAT Testing?

You need PAT Testing if you provide or manage electrical equipment that others use. Whether you run a business, rent out property, or oversee a public building, regular testing helps you meet your legal responsibilities and reduce the risk of electrical faults.

Employers

If you manage a workplace, you’re legally responsible for keeping electrical equipment safe for your staff. This includes computers, printers, kettles, and other devices used daily. Regular PAT Testing helps you meet safety regulations and avoid disruption from faulty equipment.

Landlords

If you let out property, you must make sure any electrical items you supply, like fridges, toasters, or washing machines, are safe for tenants. PAT Testing helps you meet your legal obligations and can reduce the risk of electrical incidents in your properties.

Educational Settings

If you run or work in a school, college, or nursery, you rely on a wide range of electrical appliances. From classroom equipment to kitchen tools, regular PAT Testing helps you maintain a safe environment for staff, pupils, and visitors.

Construction Sites

If you’re in charge of a construction site, your team likely uses tools and equipment in challenging conditions. Regular PAT Testing is essential to check for wear, damage, or faults and to meet safety standards on-site.

Community & Public Spaces

If you manage a community centre, place of worship, or other public venue, PAT Testing helps ensure that any appliances used by staff, volunteers, or visitors are safe. This includes items like heaters, kitchen devices, and sound equipment.

Hospitality Businesses

If you operate a hotel, café, pub, or takeaway, you use many portable appliances daily. PAT Testing helps you check these items are safe and reduces the risk of electrical faults that could affect your staff or customers.

What’s Checked During the PAT Test?

During a PAT Test, each appliance is checked to make sure it’s safe to use. The process includes both a visual inspection and a set of electronic tests. These checks help identify signs of damage, wear, or faults that could lead to injury or equipment failure.

Plug & Cable

The plug is opened and checked for loose wires, signs of overheating, and correct fuse rating. The cable is inspected for cuts, exposed wires, or other visible damage that could pose a risk.

Appliance Casing

The outer casing of the appliance is checked for cracks, burns, or other signs of physical damage. If the casing is damaged, the appliance may not be safe to use.

Earth Continuity

This test checks whether the earth connection in the appliance is working correctly. It’s important for appliances with metal parts that could become live if there’s a fault.

Insulation Resistance

This test checks that the electrical insulation around the internal wiring is in good condition. It helps ensure that electricity cannot leak to accessible parts of the appliance.

Functional Check

If needed, the appliance is switched on briefly to check that it works correctly. This helps identify any obvious faults that the other tests may not detect.

Labelling & Identification

After testing, each appliance is labelled to show whether it has passed or failed. The label includes the test date, the tester’s initials, and when the next test is due (if applicable).

What Happens After the Test?

Once the testing is complete, each appliance is labelled to show whether it has passed or failed. You’ll receive a detailed report that lists all the items tested, their results, and any recommendations.

If any appliances fail, you’ll be told why and what steps you need to take next. A PAT Testing certificate is also issued for your records. This can be used to show compliance with health and safety regulations and may be requested during inspections or insurance checks.
